fhnjdkslf DO YOU UNDERSTAND HOW HARD IT IS FOR ME TO WRITE FUNNY WITH KELLEN’S GRIMDARK STORY SHIT?? FHJDSKLF

But like the entire thing can’t all be Emo McDepressingpants all the time. That would make people depressed and make the story and atmosphere of it flat, so it would be totally uninteresting. Yeah, there’s happy parts at the beginning (at both phase I when Kellen’s a kid and phase II, when he’s a teen), but then that all gets SHATTERED. But like, just because people get killed and murdered doesn’t mean the rest of the story can’t have ANY smiles. If I only put my characters in the same situations over and over again, they’ll react the same way, over and over again, and then they look underdeveloped and boring fhjdkslfhs

BUT NOTHING GOOD EVER HAPPENS TO KELLEN

I’ll have you all know that I am actually hard at work on worldbuilding/storytelling for my Sestrians and not just doodling silly memes, doing things for other people, or making DA IDs and icons. :>

I actually have a new character coming along who should have a design within a week. :D No name until I actually get my phonology shit sorted out because AUGH it’s been so long since I worked on that. BUT, I can tell you that he’s about Kellen’s age, is related to him, and they’re actually pretty close. ;D

There’s also a lot of behind the scenes stuff I’m doing that’s more on the critical analysis level of stuff (which is actually one of the reasons this new kid is showing up). In fact, that’s most of what I’ve actually been doing with this story for the past 6 months. :I

I will tell you that at no point is the story told from the point of view of Satyr Kellen anymore. It was like that, but now it’s not. And because of this, my demon hunters- possibly Shei and Kinu, too!- are making a comeback. Awww man, I missed those guys. <3

Stay tuned, dudes.

Sestrian Society 101: Government

I’ve been working on the Sestrian government and stuffs and I think it’s about time for a write up so I can keep track of what I’ve done with it and so I can have a bit of consistency. I’ve also said things about it here and there in my other posts but never really explained it in full. So here’s a short summary of it. :>

The Sestrian government is aristocratic, and they run off of a capitalist economic system, which is what fuels Sestra’tyrs imperialism. They conquer other countries and found colonies to maximize trade and create more trade routes, while minimizing the costs of resources and products from said colonies and annexes by ruling over them. They also have high tariffs and taxes, and mostly make policies to support big companies and the wealthy and to maximize the extents of their empire.

Sestra’tyr was founded by several (about a dozen) leaders who came together to unite the islands of the sea on the mainland. They became the leaders of the new but prosperous land, and their descendants after them ruled, too. As the pool of descendants became larger, they began to organize themselves into a more complex, advanced governmental system. Though the court as a whole would make decisions together, they also formed smaller committees to take on specific tasks. These would the Committee of Defense, which looks after the army and has several subsections, the Committee of Internal Revenue, which controls taxes, the Committee for Foreign Trade, etc, etc. Each committee or bureau acts as a separate entity and hires people into its own ranks to get stuff done, all the way from the levels of the rich to the levels of the commoners (though most government employees are wealthier). For example, as you go down in the ranks of the army and navy, the personnel get lower and lower in society’s hierarchy.

Nobles can’t simply just join a committee either; they have to be nominated and voted in. Once they are voted in for a position, their term lasts about seven years. They can serve more than one term, of course, but they must be voted in again. If the head of a committee dies or is unable to lead anymore, the vice head becomes the head. People who are not part of the court cannot join the committee itself, but can be hired as part of the the services they look after.

To become an aristocrat/noble, you have to be born as one, or married into it. Very rarely are people married in, however; over the generations, as the nobles became richer and more detached from commoner society, it became taboo to marry anyone outside of the court or outside of the extremely wealthy. It is possibly, however, to become an honorary noble through extremely heroic deeds, but this just earns you a good reputation and the title of “Lord” or “Lady.”

Women also don’t have much power. They are not allowed in government affairs, though they may be influential in other ways, and have little choice in their marriages. The are very lucky if their fathers marry them off to someone they truly love; normally they pick and choose suitors based on how beneficial it will be to the family’s power and reputation. In commoner society, women have more power and are often the matriarchs of the family co-ruling the family with the patriarch, but in the court the men have almost all of the power. If a noblewoman’s husband dies, she will most often marry again soon after because of the troubles heading a family would have with the prejudice and sexism towards women in the court.

So that’s the government in a nutshell! :V There’s definitely more to it than that- like all the hierarchy stuff from noble to slave- but this is mostly about how the government is run and not socially constructed tiers. :>

10/7/12: List of Retcons and Changes

Been a while since a changes post! There’s been a lot of big changes since the last one, so many that I can’t really remember them all since I haven’t been writing them down, but here’s the main ones:

  • Kellen’s grandfather is assassinated by the vice head of the committee he’s on in the aristocracy. It is not by Rashis or a Kezzym, since that would make them out to be the main villains of the story when they are not; Rashis is just an proponent of Kellen’s hate, which is the actual villain. The assassination occurs because, as head of the committee, Aryl wanted to take it in a direction he knew would be best, while the vice head wanted to go in a completely different direction. Seeing as how his term would not be over for several years, the vice head had Aryl killed so that he could rise to the head of the committee. Though it is sort of a “public secret” among the aristocrats that it was probably the vice head that killed Aryl, only the actual assassin is caught and imprisoned to appease the law. The committee will likely be something about taxes (looking at “Committee for Internal Revenue” or something like that). So the vice head, who doesn’t have a name yet, will want to raise the taxes to even more ridiculous amounts to support greater military operations, while Aryl would want to keep them the same for fear of rebellion and losing support of the troops.
  • Though this point doesn’t seem quite that important, Kellen, at the beginning of the middle phase of the story (teen) has long hair- it’s been this way for a while. Most of the time I draw him with shorter hair, but this is not true to his status in society. Longer hair for Sestrian men is a status symbol that shows that they have the time and luxury to groom themselves and that they don’t do much in the way of physical labor or activity, not even in commanding troops (that’s almost all of what they do, command and not fight- though they do take up sparring as a pastime and are often instructed in the use of magic). What I’m changing about Kellen’s long hair is the way in which he loses it. After the ridiculous raise in taxes by new the head of the Internal Revenue committee, people start to get violent towards any nobles or rich people they see in the streets. Kellen ends up being on the receiving end of this, his long ponytail- one of the symbols of his status- is cut off. Previously, he cut it off himself when he left home, but then grew it back as a satyr, which makes no sense if he didn’t want to be a noble anymore.
  • Azj is no longer the creation of Riashji (as implied by my description of my last drawing of him), and Riashji does not create demons. Though she is the matron goddess of satyrs, the despairing, and the rageful, they look up to her as one of them; she has been betrayed, she has known sorrow and pain, and they feel that she, unlike the rest of the world, can sympathize. Praying to hate itself- an abstract concept with supposedly no physical form- would give them no image to worship. Azj is now that primordial force, and Azj is the one who turned Riashji into what she is.
  • Along the same lines, I am removing Shataka (the little demon wormies that turn people into satyrs), but I’m not so sure how people will turn back to normal after being satyrs now. I’ve decided not to get rid of satyrs, though, since the whole point is hate turns you into a monster. Basically, now that Riashji is not the creator of demons, and since Azj walks among the people and tricks them into trusting him (being a shapeshifter), trying to cause chaos, it doesn’t make much sense for him to send out Shataka. He is not trying to build an army like Riashji was- he likes to deal with each person individually, and can be in more than one place at once anyway. So after winning them over, I figure that Azj can just turn them into satyrs himself rather than other things doing it for him. If I keep Shataka, he’ll create one out of thin air- but why would he want it to be removable? So Shataka are gone. I liked them, though. They were cute. :C I’ll have to figure out how people turn back from satyrs, since I still want Zerryn to come in.

So yeah that’s pretty much it for now. :> I’ve been working on outfits for nobles and commoners, so Kelly will be seen in some new clothes pretty soon. Once I stop being lazy and get a real ref done, at least. :D

[[This is a snippet of the background story of 2085 (formerly 2167), which I want to make into an interactive type of thing like a visual novel, or told from a different point of view. In that case, Cody would not be the main character and nobody would see this part. But it’s something I thought up yesterday during breakfast. So yeah. I’ve wanted to make a character like Harrison for a month or so, but never had a purpose for him. He’s inspired by one of my coworkers, though my coworker (who must be 30-something) is one of those people who didn’t get anywhere because he was “playing games in the street” (words that I actually got from him). Sometimes he says some pretty inspiring things.

Also, it’s mostly just dialogue that I wanted to type out, so pardon the lack of description… or lack of good description. This didn’t take me very long to rattle out. XD]]

Character Excluded from Catalog:

  • +Anima fan character I couldn’t remember anything about (though she had been drawn in Sketchbook 1)
  • Magical crossover/”OC” land (spanning middle school - early high school). I may do a redraw of a picture I did in 9th grade, which had all of the characters in it
  • Characters whose stories are “current” and I plan to make reference sheets for (Sestrians and their gods who did not come out of my WoW fics, such as Rashis and Pirru, or people from Cody’s story)
  • Pirate character I made for a tabletop RP that never happened

Yep, so that’s about it. I am seriously considering doing that redraw, but the characters may appear differently than how they did in the original picture because over the years I’ve gone back and changed them a bit out of boredom/missing them even though they sucked. I also change Inuyasha and Sesshomaru into different people so that the crossover thing wasn’t going on with them, but I’m not sure whether I want the new characters or Sessh and Inu to be in the redraw.

I will definitely be doing reference sheets of those “current” story characters and the Sestrian gods as I expand upon their worlds and finish their stories.

Changes and Retcons (?) 5/10/12

Gah, really questioning the whole “yes humans exist on another continent and then they trade with Sestrians and stuff” thing. It just doesn’t feel right, and having all these different races with different types and levels of technology is a bit too much like WoW. I mean, I know it’s like that in the real world, but if one side is all magic and one side is steampunk, it makes the world feel too jumbled up. So, no more humans because fuck that. I can make a different steampunk place on a different world.

I really, really like the idea of Sestrians having guns, though, but I don’t want them to have had them for very long, just to show how their technology isn’t static and also because Cail was still using a bow when Kelly was a teenager, and I don’t want to change that because he’s always been an archer.

Yeah so guns and stuff! Since there is a 50-year period between the beginning and (true) ending of the story, guns have time to be created. Sestra’tyr is a highly militarized country, and they are constantly absorbing the technologies of the countries they annex, and developing new ways to conquer them.

Since training in magic is highly time consuming (it takes years to become proficient in any type of magic) and expensive, people are looking for new long-range weapons (especially for for soldiers), with high accuracy and are re-usable and last for a long time and can be standardized. Bows and arrows were the weapons they used before, but they’re highly unreliable, it takes too much time and material to create arrows, and any imperfections in aerodynamics can throw things off, plus, marksmanship is hard to train with arrows, since they are highly influenced by wind. So someone comes up with guns! Yay guns! Not magic guns, just guns.

Okay so Sestrians have guns now. Everyone is fucked. :D

Starting Sestrian Phonology/Language Building

I just realized that English does have the “zj” sound that my Sestrians have in their language. It’s [ʒ] and I just never realized we had it because it occurs in different environments than in Sestrian. It’s in words like “beige,” “pleasure,” and “vision.” It occurs only after vowels that are voiced in the front, whereas in Sestrian it can occur at the beginning of a word or after consonants. In Sestrian, they also have an unvoiced counterpart, which I normally represent with “shj.”

Trying to work on phonology finally so I can get to naming/renaming more people and places and make them all sound like the same language. This is hard. :’I Then I have to work on syntax, though I’ve already figured out that it’s an SOV (subject object verb) language. So instead of saying “I ate the pizza” they would say “I the pizza ate.” Except it wouldn’t sound so silly, because it would be in Sestrian.

And then I need to work on verb conjugation and subject/object agreement, plurals, possessives, and stuff like that. Though I think I may have a system for possession worked out already, but we’ll see.

Lol I took my Linguistics class ONLY so I could do this and vaguely know what I’m doing. I didn’t give a shit that it filled a science/Q requirement. X’D

Annnnd then I have to work on script…  I used to have a Sestrian script, but once I change/add/remove the sounds in their language I’ll need to re-do it, since the symbols were matched to the English alphabet/phonology and not Sestrian. Ajnjslfdies.

And theeeeen I have to work on architecture, and maybe define a bit more of their history, and fix their mythology, and society and customs and make a map of Sestra’tyr and the world and NAME the world which I gave a temporary name (Kalam’tyr) and put different nations and places on the map and blah.

All in the name of creating a convincing world that I can place many different stories in. It’ll be worth it, though. :’3

4/24/12- Retcons and Changes

Story

  • Pirru has been removed from the phase of the story in which Kellen is a kid. She may or may not be removed from the later parts (I have not decided). I feel a bit bad about this since she’s adorable as a child AND I just made her AND she was specifically for that part, but we’ll see what happens. Not only is there a replacement for her in that part, but she also only appears to people who wish to sin, and Kellen, as a 10 year old, can’t really, really wish to do that.
  • Kellen’s grandfather is now a more prominent character, which is the reason for Pirru’s removal. Rather than Pirru leading Kellen to find that his mother had been poisoned and become a vengeful rage machine right away, his grandfather tells him (against Zjenshou’s wishes, but grandpa Kelly doesn’t like secrets). So Aryl (name change possible), Kellen’s grandfather, has this deep meaningful conversation with a 10 year old. Kellen does not go seeking revenge right away because of it. He says that if you wait, your enemies will suffer threefold what they have inflicted upon you. So Kelly waits.
  • Ama has been wiped out of the story. She is a useless character. Kellen may get a different fiancee who makes more sense (she was his paternal cousin- would make a bit more sense to marry someone not in your own House, like a maternal cousin), and generally had a terrible personality and couldn’t do anything. So Kellen’s uncle now has two small children who annoy teen Kelly to no end. :D

Misc.

  • Qinni now has adorable buck teeth. Not super pronounced but still adorable. ;w;

4/13/12: List of Recent Retcons and Changes

Okay so I decided I’m starting this shit out from the beginning. Fuck Kellen, forget about him for now, he’s not important AT ALL to this part of the story. He’s a side effect of all this.

So I used my new guidelines and figured out that I need to scrap the invasion of Cir because what the fuck? Why the fuck would it EVER be reasonable for Rashis to set dragons on Cir? Sure he’s from the family in charge of them, but there’s just too many plotholes to fill there. I mean really, come on. It’s been months and I haven’t really come up with a legitimate reason other than Rashis being insane and he’s actually not, he’s just very cold and calculating and knows what he wants. Cir will stay on the map, but will not be involved in this part of the story. I’m thinking about having the rebellion there be sort of happening/discussed in the background as part of the setting.

So here’s what happens:

So guys I started this journal thing IRL that I can just write down notes and stuff in. It says “World Building Journal” though right now I’m not really building the world so much as fixing my plot.

I came up with a number of questions to help me streamline my story/make it less stupid and so far it’s been helping a lot.

  • Does the person/event/etc have a purpose? Is that purpose significant?
  • Do I like it/enjoy that part of the story?
  • Was it brought over from the WoW story? (Does it bear too much resemblance to events in WoW?)
  • Does it “fit,” or does it make things too complicated, convoluted, or “stretched?”
  • Is it in-character/does it make sense for that to happen?
  • Is it cliche or overdone?
  • If it causes/is related to a major plot point or event, is it replaceable, removable, or modifiable?

It just did this today and it’s already helped me a lot. ;w; I’ll be posting another list of retcons when I have more than like… 3 things.

4/9/12- List of Recent Retcons, Changes, and Plothole Fillers

Mostly for myself so I can keep track of things.

Story-wise:

  • Kellen does NOT get poisoned along with his mother.
  • Not sure if I want Zjenshou to actually slit Arylia’s throat as a mercy killing anymore. I’m not sure whether he would do that to end her suffering or try to hold out hope that she would pull through/they’d get the antidote.
  • Partially filled plothole with Rashis and the dragons, though the question “why” still needs to be fully answered (doesn’t have to be totally rational though). Not telling you guys cause spoilers! :U
  • The House of Kezz no longer runs the slave trade, but condones it and helps out illegal traders behind the scenes- this is where Qinni comes from.
  • Inserted several scenes where Kellen is bullied/why he has no friends (directly after his mother died all the other kids deemed him “boring” and “depressing” and they stopped playing with him as much, Kellen ended up distancing himself from them after that. During teen years he got bullied about not “getting over it” and being an asshole [which he is]). Also this is partially why he hates the entire aristocracy, also because of what Pirru says to him all the time.
  • Zerryn is no longer a teacher since I can’t see him/Kelly ever being able to do that. He’s simply a demon hunter (who hunts demons to satisfy his withdrawals- he takes their blood/demonic essence stuff) who takes on an apprentice once in a while for money (i.e. Yneris).
  • Been thinking about the “meaning/message” or “theme” the story is supposed to focus around, which has always been the negative effects of revenge. I don’t want to make everything symbolic or anything, but Kellen is the victim of vengeance in both senses of the word- his mother is killed because of family rivalry and the greed of Rashis (who’s trying to cover up his tracks and can’t let anyone find out about him)- and he also falls into the mindset of vengefulness and cannot escape it for the rest of his life. So in a way, Kellen can represent anyone- everyone can fall prey to feelings of hate, despair, and longing for revenge. Pirru is the voice in your head telling you that’s what you want, that the rest of the world sucks and deserves your hate and needs to be punished. But in the end, revenge ruins everyone, directly and indirectly, and sets off a chain reaction.

World-wise

  • Figured out what magic “looks” like. When using energy magic (which needs a new name), the user is drawing energy from around them and from themselves. Their veins glow with whatever color (dunno if it will be a fixed color yet (probably white) or a slightly different color depending on the person (<- probably this) and so will the cells in their skin, and their eyes will brighten. Jenim/dark magic users will get the same effect with black and dark colors, though it will mostly be their veins since they’re only drawing from themselves and their eyes don’t light up.
  • Anyone has the potential to use jenim, even accidentally. If someone is raging super hard and tries to use their energy for energy magic, it will likely turn up as dark magic instead. This is because jenim/dark magic is essentially the manifestation of negativity- hate, vengeance, sorrow, etc- and your energy contains those feelings.
  • Elemental magic is still a work in progress. At this point I MIGHT get rid of it for them, though probably not. I just don’t have many if any users of it at the moment.
  • There are humans on a continent across the ocean from the Sestrians. At the time of Zerryn, they have just made first contact and are starting to bring back stuff, including guns. The human civilization is in a transition period between steampunk and 1600s technology. They’re a bit less advanced than Sestrians in many places, but are skilled in working with gears and moving parts and stuff like that.
  • Demon/black dragons are getting a makeover. When I get that done I’ll post it. If I get that done.

Misc

  • If I start drawing or typing things that don’t go with the story it will likely be an AU or fluff that doesn’t get included that’s simply for my enjoyment. :U This will help me be like “okay that can happen” but have it not end up in the official timeline/story. Because that’s how I ended up with a huge mess of a storyline in the first place. =w=;

“Short” summary of Kellen’s childhood & Arylia’s death

(Mostly for keeping track of what I need to work on/where there are plot holes/etc. Typing at 2:30 AM so please bear with the typos.)

At the age of 10, Kellen is a happy, healthy prince of the House of Saresh, a noble family of the aristocratic country of Sestra’tyr.

At this time, the neighboring country, Cir, was rebelling against Sestrian oppression. Though they claimed to be “allies,” the Sestrians were exploiting Cirtian resources to the point that Cirtians had almost nothing- more like a tyrannous imperial country taking over a smaller one (which is essentially what the Sestrian nobles wanted). The Cirtians blocked off Sestrian access by foot. Located in a mountain valley, it would be extremely difficult if not impossible to get into the country.

Sestra’tyr had vast military resources, however, and began to discuss the methods they should use to end the rebellion. Completely crush them? Simply warn them? Scare them off? Leave them alone? These were all options.

The young prince Rashis of the House of Kezz (around 17 years old at the time) decided to take matters into his own hands. His family was in charge of the air offense- the powerful, dangerous dragons that were reserved for either crushing an enemy immediately or in dire situations- both circumstances which were rare. Rashis forged the signature of the head of the house (his great grandfather), the other “sub”-heads of the house (father, uncle, grandfather, great uncles, etc), and the overseer of the Sestrian court. He handed off these signatures- on a counterfeit paper stating that the immediate release of the dragons onto Cir was required- to the general that oversaw the dragon hordes. The dragons were then released onto the small neighboring country, crushing the rebellion but also the society of the Cirtians. [Plot hole- WHY would he want to do that? Assert power/prove self? (No- he didn’t want anyone to find out it was him.)]

Since this attack was unauthorized by the court, there was much uproar over what to do about the Cirtians now. Many were fleeing into or through Sestra’tyr to avoid another attack or more exploitation. [Snag: Wouldn’t Kezz’ym be punished for authorizing the release of the dragons? They wouldn’t know it was Rashis alone, and probably wouldn’t trust what the rest say if their signatures were on it.]

Despite being of rival houses (who absolutely hated each others’ guts), Mezja Kezz’ym (mother of Rashis) and Arylia Saresh’ym (mother of Kellen) kept their childhood friendship going strong, and tried to visit each other as much as their could (they were married into said houses). Once Rashis overheard his mother confiding in Arylia that she was convinced her own son had set the dragons on Cir- he had been acting strangely and was always a very cunning boy. Now that Arylia knew, he had to get rid of her. So he sent a household servant, an 8 year old Cirtian by the name of Qinni, to bring Arylia and Mezja tea. He gave specific instructions in how to prepare one of the cups of tea and to give that specially prepared cup to Arylia. Qinni follow without question, even though the questionable liquid he was putting in Lady Saresh’ym’s drink was… well, questionable.

Arylia drank the whole thing, and promptly fell ill to the point of being bedridden. Kellen was sent to stay at his uncle’s house while his mother recovered (though he wasn’t told about the sickness; it was a simply a “sleep over” or “vacation” with his cousin). [Previously Kellen had a few sips of it too and was also poisoned but later cured- not sure if I should keep this.] Kellen’s father, Zjenshou, was convinced it was the work of someone in Kezz’ym, specifically Mezja because she was the only one Arylia had been with that day. He searched far and wide for an antidote, but the only people who had the antidote to this specific poison- Sestrian dragon venom- was, of course, Kezz’ym, since they raised the dragons and had to have antidote for their trainers.

Despite requesting it nicely, Zjenshou was denied access to the antidote. Mezja even came to the house, planning to give some to him (she didn’t want her best friend to die), but was accompanied by Rashis, who wouldn’t let her give it to him and kept a very close eye on her. Arylia had fallen into a coma at this point, and was so thin, sickly, and hopeless that Zjenshou couldn’t bear to watch her die anymore. He took a knife to her to put her out of her misery, though definitely not without guilt. Kellen was told that his mother died of a very sudden sickness, in her sleep.

Kellen, only 10 at the time, was absolutely devastated by the loss. His mother was his entire world, and now that whole world had collapsed. Even though he looked for something to stick the blame on, he had to accept the explanation he was given. That is, until he made a friend who prompted him to think that perhaps he didn’t know the whole story. This was Pirru, a mysterious child who seemed to appear out of nowhere, but also seemed to know almost everything. [Still working on this character- mostly made to fill plot holes/be a kusuriuri inspired character like I’ve wanted.]

S/he [haven’t decided] convinced Kellen to dig a little deeper. Why was there a strip of bloody cloth wrapped around his mother’s neck when he saw her body? Why was she, a young, healthy woman suddenly taken in her sleep by a sickness? Why was his father so strange afterwards- beyond the depression that you would normally see? Why did Mezja- on the few occasions Kellen saw her anymore- seem the same way? And why, on those occasions, was Rashis always with her, and why was their relationship so tense- and perhaps abusive?

Pirru led Kellen to conclude that Mezja had poisoned his mother for some unknown reason [doesn’t need one at this point- he just needs to place the blame], and his father had finished the job, even though there was still time enough to find a cure [in Kellen’s mind, mercy killing was still murder all the same especially because it was his mom].

The murderers had to be punished, said Pirru; Nay, the whole government had to be punished! They were so corrupt that they hadn’t done anything about the Cirtians- about the slave trade for Cirtians that was not allowed because they were “allies-” or about the murder of Arylia (even though everyone pretty much believed the ‘died in her sleep’ store whether they wanted to or not). Kellen based his life and its goals around this philosophy for the next 6 years. [Plot hole (?): Why not just take a knife to Mezja and Zjenshou? Dishonorable? Needed to defeat in a duel? (Well, taking on a whole government would need lots of power, so practicing magic or some kind of combat for years is plausible?]

[Some of this needs to be revised (preferably before I move onto the next section of Kellen’s life. Biggest plot hole: Why would Rashis do that? Unless it wasn’t Rashis who forged the paper/signatures, but I want it to be Rashis. Perhaps Pirru does something to make him do that? Maybe Cirtians slaves rebelling as well- Rashis wants to prove that they are no better in their homeland?]
